China is set to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into teaching methods, textbooks, and school curricula as part of a major education overhaul, authorities announced in a policy document released Wednesday.

The initiative, targeting students and educators across primary, secondary, and higher education levels, aims to strengthen innovation and drive new growth in the world’s second-largest economy. According to the education ministry, promoting AI will help “cultivate the basic abilities of teachers and students” and enhance the “core competitiveness of innovative talents.”

For students, these foundational skills include independent thinking, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork, the ministry stated. The integration of AI is also expected to create more dynamic and challenging classroom environments.

The move follows the rapid expansion of AI courses in Chinese universities, spurred by the success of domestic startups like DeepSeek, which gained global attention in January with its cost-efficient large-language model.

This push aligns with China’s national action plan to become a “strong-education nation” by 2035, leveraging technological advancements to achieve its education goals. President of the United States, Donald Trump, also signed an executive order to ensure America’s competitiveness in AI through the incorporation of AI in America’s education system.
