Tech leaders are on a race to build the best AI model and Musk has put his Grok-3 where his mouth is. But OpenAI will not stay idle.
Elon Musk and xAI’s new release, Grok-3, has risen to the top of the AI industry. Released on Monday, the chatbot is currently ranked first in the Chatbot Arena leaderboard. The leaderboard ranks best large-language models and AI chatbots based on user preference. Grok-3 is also currently at the top of Apple Store, ahead of ChatGPT.
According to xAI, Grok-3 is built with ten times as much computing power as the previous model. It beats Google’s Gemini 2.0, OpenAI’s GPT-4o, and DeepSeek’s V3 across math, science, and coding benchmarks.
In an interview at the World Government Summit in Dubai last week, Musk expressed confidence in Grok—yet to be released at the time—as the world’s leading AI model. The xAI chief executive said, “Grok-3 has very powerful reasoning capabilities. In the tests that we’ve done thus far, Grok-3 is outperforming anything that’s been released, that we’re aware of, so that’s a good sign.”
Musk further added that “this might be the last time that an AI is better than Grok.”

However, in a clear bid to reestablish their superiority, OpenAI announced this week that ChatGPT now has up to 400 million active users a week. The rivalry between Musk and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman might be fueling the competition between their two companies.
Musk is also suing OpenAI, a company that he co-founded in 2015. The world’s richest businessman believes that the company has moved away from its original vision of being a non-profit. Several sources have confirmed that OpenAI is indeed making plans to convert to a for-profit business.
Last week, Musk submitted a near-$100 billion bid for OpenAI. It led to a public spat between Musk and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. The bid was rejected by OpenAI, and the company is in fact now taking steps to prevent a hostile takeover from Musk.
