Education models will be completely transformed by 2032 due to significant AI technology investment.
The investment of AI technology in education is set to grow up to $88.2 billion and radically change the sector by 2032, according to a report by Allied Market Research (AMR).
The period of lockdown during COVID-19 facilitated an online learning trend that gave rise to many digital solutions for education. Experts at AMR predict that the trend is set to grow rapidly over the next decade with the introduction of more generative AI tools for learning. The global AI in education market was valued at only $2.5 billion as of 2022.
Educational institutions are set to introduce more AI tech to teaching and learning. AI systems adopted by schools include tools for personalized learning, interventions targeted at students with unique needs, and other adaptive learning tools that allow students to explore convenient methods of learning. Giants in the education market include major tech companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Google, and OpenAI.
Microsoft’s Copilot has been adapted into a learning tool for educators worldwide. It can assist teachers in planning lessons and drafting activities and assessments that are in line with class objectives. For students, it can personalize lessons and break down class resources based on their needs. A recent study reported by the World Bank showed that students who learned through interaction with Microsoft’s Copilot were able to outperform their peers in all areas of learning. These included second language learners of English who were able to outpace their classmates both during class and in exams.
OpenAI has also announced a collaboration with California State University (CSU), showing that AI is equally set to play a key role at the tertiary level. The partnership will lead to the release of ChatGPT Edu, a version of the AI model customized for use in educational institutions. The new model will be accessed by up to 500,000 students at CSU. The goal is to leverage ChatGPT to optimize curriculum development and tutoring, while building a workforce with in-demand AI skills.
“The CSU has long been known for our unwavering commitment to access, equity and innovation,” says Dr. Mildred García, Chancellor of CSU. “To uphold our mission, we must ensure that our diverse students from across California and staff are ‘AI-empowered’ to thrive as our world evolves.”
There have been concerns in the past about ChatGPT and other AI models uses in cheating and plagiarism. However, more and more institutions are considering a controlled deployment to harness the advantages of AI and carefully manage its risks.
