India is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) as a key driver of economic growth and innovation with the launch of the AI for India 2030 initiative. This ambitious program aims to integrate AI across critical sectors, with the potential to contribute $500 billion to the economy by 2025 according to the World Economic Forum.
Backed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Nasscom, and the World Economic Forum’s Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) India, the initiative focuses on ethical, inclusive, and responsible AI adoption.
Experts highlight AI’s role in agriculture, healthcare, urban planning, and manufacturing, addressing systemic challenges and improving efficiency. Public-private partnerships and India’s digital public infrastructure (DPI) will be crucial for scaling AI solutions nationwide.
Key workstreams under the initiative include an AI Playbook—which provides guidelines for sectors like farming and small businesses—and an AI Sandbox, designed to support startups and SMEs in testing AI solutions before large-scale deployment.
“As India’s IT and start-up capital, Karnataka is committed to becoming a global leader in AI,” said Ekroop Caur, Secretary of Karnataka’s Department of Electronics and IT. Industry leaders, including Microsoft, Mahindra, and BCG, have also pledged support for the initiative.
With a strong focus on AI governance and workforce upskilling, India is positioning itself as a leader in the global AI revolution, ensuring technological advancements drive inclusive and sustainable growth.
