Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reaffirmed Ethiopia’s ambition to become a driving force in Africa’s technological transformation, arguing that homegrown artificial intelligence solutions are essential to realizing the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
Speaking at the AI for Africa session during the Ethiopian Tech Expo 2025 (ETEX 2025), Abiy outlined a vision of a digitally sovereign continent—one that develops and controls its own AI tools rather than relying on foreign platforms.
“With a clear strategic vision and bold investment, Africa can guide the development of AI on its own terms—anchored in ethical frameworks, inclusion, and sustainability,” he told attendees.
The prime minister pointed to Ethiopia’s expanding tech initiatives, including the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, the national Digital ID program, and the “5 Million Coders” campaign, as evidence of progress.
“Africa must not be a passive recipient of AI tools developed elsewhere,” Abiy said. “We must become innovators and owners of our future.”
Tech Expo Showcases Ethiopia’s Digital Ascent
Held under the theme Leveraging AI for Africa’s Prosperity and Collaboration, ETEX 2025 has drawn more than 10,000 participants since its May 16 opening at the Addis International Convention Center. Co-hosted by Ethiopia’s Information Network Security Administration (INSA) and the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute, the three-day event spotlights cybersecurity, fintech, smart cities, and AI-driven education.
A centerpiece of the expo was a record-setting drone display featuring 1,500 synchronized units—the largest such show ever staged in Africa—which illustrated Ethiopia’s digital evolution and aspirations as a regional tech hub.
A Continental Push for Digital Sovereignty
As African nations increasingly integrate AI into governance and economic planning, Ethiopia’s aggressive investments in digital infrastructure are positioning it as a key architect of the continent’s technological future.
Abiy urged African leaders to collaborate on policy, infrastructure, and education to ensure that the AI revolution leaves no nation behind. His call reflects a broader continental push for self-reliance in an era where global tech dominance remains concentrated outside Africa.
With its expanding digital initiatives and high-profile tech diplomacy, Ethiopia appears determined to shape—not just follow—the next wave of innovation sweeping the continent.
