A plan to guide the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Illinois schools is advancing in the legislature, aiming to establish the state’s first framework for evaluating and implementing AI technology in education.

Under Senate Bill 1920, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) would develop guidelines by July 1, 2026, covering AI’s role in teaching, student privacy, and digital literacy. The proposal also calls for updates to internet safety education, including responsible AI use and recognizing cyberbullying or AI-generated deepfakes.

“A year and a half after I had to start making my own decisions about AI in the classroom, I still have no official guidance to turn to,” said Sarah Murmann, a math teacher. “Twenty-five other states already have guidance—smaller districts like mine need support.”

The bill allows the state superintendent to convene a council of stakeholders to refine recommendations. Rep. Laura Faver Dias (D-Grayslake), a supporter, emphasized teaching students to use AI “ethically and responsibly.”

If passed, Illinois would join a growing number of states addressing AI in education.
