Music mogul Simon Cowell has voiced strong opposition to proposed changes in U.K. copyright law that could allow artificial intelligence (AI) companies to train on creative works without explicit permission from artists.

In an op-ed for The Daily Mail, the America’s Got Talent judge warned that such changes could devastate artists’ careers, calling it “just wrong” for AI to exploit human creativity without consent or compensation.

“I passionately care about people’s personal creativity – and AI shouldn’t be able to steal the talent of those humans who created the magic in the first place,” Cowell stated.

Legendary musician Elton John also weighed in, arguing that the proposed law would strip artists of control over their work. While he acknowledged AI’s potential, he insisted that creators’ rights must be protected.

In response to the controversy, over 1,000 musicians, including Kate Bush and Damon Albarn, released a silent protest album titled Is This What We Want? The album, consisting of 12 tracks of empty studio recordings, symbolizes what they fear will happen to the industry if the law is enacted.

With growing backlash from the entertainment community, the debate over AI and copyright protections is far from over.
