Canada’s privacy commissioner has launched an investigation into X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, to determine whether its use of personal data for training AI models complies with federal privacy laws. The probe follows a complaint regarding X’s collection, use, and disclosure of Canadians’ data.

Since its rebranding from Twitter, X has faced growing scrutiny over its data practices, particularly in relation to AI development. The investigation will focus on how the platform handles data used for AI models, such as Grok, the chatbot developed by Musk’s AI firm xAI, which relies on vast amounts of data to function.

The inquiry has drawn political attention, with opposition lawmaker Brian Masse calling for transparency and expressing concerns about AI algorithms potentially being manipulated to spread misinformation. This investigation comes amid rising tensions between Canada and the U.S. over trade and digital issues.

X has not yet responded to requests for comment. The probe reflects broader global efforts to regulate tech giants’ data practices, especially as AI technology continues to evolve rapidly.
