Marvel Studios has responded to backlash over a new promotional poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, denying allegations that artificial intelligence played a role in its creation.

The controversy erupted Tuesday morning after the studio unveiled the first trailer for the highly anticipated film, which was met with widespread praise. However, excitement quickly turned into skepticism when fans noticed odd inconsistencies in the accompanying poster, including characters with four fingers instead of five and two women with identical faces.

Social media users on platforms like X and Bluesky accused Marvel of using AI to generate the artwork instead of hiring human artists. These accusations come amid growing concerns over the entertainment industry’s use of AI, following recent controversies surrounding films like The Brutalist and Late Night With the Devil. Marvel itself faced backlash in 2023 for incorporating AI into the opening credits of its Disney+ series Secret Invasion.

Despite the speculation, a Marvel spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap that AI was not involved in the poster’s creation.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to hit theaters on July 25
