U.S. President Donald Trump and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met at the White House on Friday to discuss AI developments and the tightening of AI chip exports, following the rise of Chinese company DeepSeek according to Reuters. The tech startup’s AI model has caused a stir by launching a free assistant that claims to be more efficient and less costly than U.S. alternatives. The meeting comes as the U.S. prepares to restrict AI chip exports further this spring, aiming to prevent China from accessing advanced computing power.
Trump praised Huang as a “gentleman” but did not provide specifics on the talks. Nvidia later expressed appreciation for the opportunity to discuss AI policy and strengthening U.S. leadership. The meeting occurred as DeepSeek’s rapid success, including becoming the most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store, raised concerns about the U.S.’s position in the AI race.
Amid growing competition, the Trump administration is considering tightening restrictions on Nvidia’s H20 chips, designed for the Chinese market, following earlier export curbs under President Biden. Lawmakers have also called for more export restrictions as part of a broader review of the U.S. export control system.
